Definitely remember my first time challenging him on Crystal (or Silver. I had both but can't remember which one I first challenged Red on). My Typhlosion was my highest level Pokemon at 54 with the others around 37-45. When he threw out a level 80 pikachu, I thought to myself,"....nah, that can't be right. My game must be glitching or something". I reset the game, went right back up to him and triggered the battle again, just to find out that his level 80 pikachu was legit and was the tip of the iceberg with his other Pokemon. I downed his Pikachu after it took out 3 or 4 of my Pokemon, but his Snorlax was a wall of HP that I could never climb over. Crushed my ass over and over again...
